BETWEEN THE LINES

A ½ hour animated dramedy from Emily Ann Hoffman

Level Forward x Cartuna x The Eyeslicer

Comic illustrators and best friends Sarah and Indigo push the boundaries of their identities through explorations of sexuality, community, religion and art in an attempt to make sense of the world around them, and their place in it.

About

Sarah and Indigo, twenty-something artists in Brooklyn, use their creative practice as an illustrative tool to digest memories, fantasies and lived experiences of love, loss, family, community, identity and health. As artists, they’re both inclined to intimately explore the vast possibilities of the world before them. Yet an expansion of boundaries can also result in a loss of grounding. Sarah unravels what a queer sexual awakening means to her, while Indigo explores the impact of religion in her past and present.

Between the Lines explores the question: can you find yourself without losing yourself in the process?

Season 1 finds our protagonists exploring The Satanic Temple, non-monogamy, ghosts of lovers past, IUDs and the occult.

Style & Tone

Between the Lines will use mixed media including stop motion and 2D animation.

The stop motion animation will function as our primary world, amplifying the humanism at the heart of the show and emphasizing the physicality of Between the Lines’ themes. It will ground the story in more realistic moments. The 2D animation will represent Sarah, Indigo, and other artist’s comic art and be employed when we enter into memory, fantasy, or heightened reality, creating a more poetic and dreamy alternative to our stop-motion world. Sarah’s comic world will draw on classic romance-comics with a modern, more hand-drawn twist. Indigo has a looser, playful, inky style.

The stop motion and 2D will weave together in each episode like the songs in a musical. Sometimes the 2D animation will be directly instigated by Sarah or Indigo working on a comic. Other times, the stylistic shift will erupt from the emotion of a moment, i.e., watching Sarah question her sexual identity amidst a threesome in the pilot. Part poignant comedy, part animation spectacular, Between the Lines will feel like the child of Fleabag and Anomalisa.
